Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups apples, peeled and sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon sugar (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish (an 8×8 or 9×9-inch dish works well). Peel and slice the apples into even pieces. Toss with 1 tablespoon lemon juice.
- Combine 3 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon baking powder in a bowl. Add 1 cup softened unsalted butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Blend until crumbly.
- Press half of the crumb mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish for the crust. Toss sliced apples with 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Spread apple mixture over the crust and crumble the remaining dough on top.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and bubbling at edges. Cool on a rack for 15–20 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Serve slightly warm or at room temperature. Great with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
