- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup molasses
- 1 cup hot water
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground cloves, and salt until well combined.
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and packed brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and molasses, mixing until smooth.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with hot water. Mix until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
