Description

Bright, crunchy, and savory starter with ground chicken, mushrooms, water chestnuts, and a savory-sweet sauce wrapped in fresh lettuce leaves.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup water chestnuts, diced
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Lettuce leaves for wrapping

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Dice the onion, chop the mushrooms, mince the garlic, slice the green onions, and drain and dice the water chestnuts.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, and sugar until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Add the ground chicken to the hot skillet and cook until browned and mostly cooked through. Add the diced onion, chopped mushrooms, and minced garlic; sauté until softened, about 3–4 minutes. Stir in the water chestnuts and sliced green onions, cooking for about 1 minute.
  4. Pour the prepared sauce over the chicken mixture and stir to combine. Cook an additional 1–2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Serve the hot mixture in lettuce leaves and wrap like tacos.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add chili garlic sauce to the mix. Use firm tofu for a vegetarian option.
