- 4 slices of white bread
- 2 cups milk
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 3 eggs, separated
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup raspberry or strawberry jam
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon butter
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
- Tear the bread into small pieces and soak them in the milk for about 10 minutes. Combine the soaked bread with sugar, egg yolks, and vanilla extract and mix until blended.
- Pour the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish and bake for 30-35 minutes until it sets and the top is golden brown.
- Spread the jam over the top. Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form, fold in the breadcrumbs, and spread over the jam layer. Bake again for 10-15 minutes until the meringue turns golden brown. Allow to cool or serve warm.
Notes
Serve warm or at room temperature. Delicious on its own or with a dollop of whipped cream or ice cream.
